Bayern Munich is realigning its sports board division. Austrian Walter Gfrerer joins from league rivals VfL Wolfsburg as the new Head of Performance
Gfrerer will be responsible for athletics and performance, taking the licensed players, the FC Bayern women and the young talent at the FC Bayern Campus under his wing. The 51-year-old Austrian has worked in both areas in the past he was athletics coach at VfL Wolfsburg last season and previously worked as performance manager at AS Monaco and as fitness coach at RB Salzburg.
Eberl: Gfrerer will provide new impetus
Max Eberl is delighted with the new addition in the athletics sector and that FC Bayern has succeeded in “signing Walter Gfrerer as Head of Performance for FC Bayern. He brings a wealth of experience from his various positions and will provide new impetus,” the Munich-based sports director is certain and explains the realignment on the club’s own website: “In general, we have restructured the board area of sports in order to better meet the constantly growing challenges in top international soccer. In doing so, it was important to us to consciously focus on people who know what FC Bayern stands for – and where it wants to go. We are convinced that our club is highly professional and ideally positioned for the future, including behind the scenes. “
Krüger moves up
As a result of the structural realignment, Kathleen Krüger, formerly Head of Team Management & Project Lead Sport, will now take up a staff position in the Sport division as Senior Leading Expert Sport Strategy & Development. The 39-year-old will coordinate and evaluate the connections and synergies between all areas of sport and optimize them with those responsible.
Maciej Jagiellowicz will become Team Leader Team Management Licensed Players, and Samuel Geiler will join his team internally from FC Bayern’s Partner Support division. Bastian Wernscheid, who previously worked in team management for three years and has been with the club since 2017, has been supporting Chief Sports Officer Max Eberl and Sports Director Christoph Freund as Sports Officer since January 1.
