British anti-doping authorities have imposed a multi-year ban on a boxer. The authority is not aware that the athlete is no longer alive
Extremely macabre ban by the British Anti-Doping Authority! UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) has imposed a four-year doping ban on Mexican boxer Moises Calleros, even though he died months ago. Calleros died suddenly on March 1 at the age of just 34. It is suspected that the boxer suffered a cardiac arrest. However, the anti-doping authorities were clearly unaware of the athlete’s tragic death.
After his defeat to Britain’s Galal Yafai in the spring of 2023, the Mexican tested positive for cocaine. Calleros had boxed in London’s O2 Arena in the prelude to Anthony Joshua’s victory over Jermaine Franklin and was technically knocked out in the fourth round.
UKAD’s initial statement said: “Mexican professional boxer Moises Calleros has been banned from all sports that comply with the World Anti-Doping Code for four years for anti-doping rule violations for the presence and use of a prohibited substance. “
British anti-doping authority clueless
And further: “UKAD has reported and charged Mr. Calleros with the presence and use of a prohibited substance and provisionally suspended him.” The case was subsequently referred to the independent National Anti-Doping Panel. This then imposed the penalty.
After the British Anti-Doping Authority was informed of the boxer’s death, they were shocked by what had happened. “Unfortunately, UKAD had no information about the sad death of Mr. Calleros at the time of publication and has now removed all details of the case from its channels. “
His last opponent, Yafai, commented on a social media post on the subject with the words: “He passed away in March, in case you didn’t already know! RIP. “
