Roll backwards in Manchester? Ten Hag to remain United coach

Despite a historically poor season, Erik ten Hag is set to remain as Manchester United manager. Instead of being replaced in the summer as expected, he now even has a contract extension

With just 60 points from 38 games, Manchester United finished eighth in the final Premier League table in the past season – the last time United finished so poorly was after the 1989/90 season. Although the Red Devils secured a place in European business by winning the FA Cup against city rivals Manchester City, it was still only a matter of time before they parted company with manager Erik ten Hag.

Numerous candidates were discussed

The people in charge at United were not happy with the sporting development of their team under the Dutchman, who was appointed in the summer of 2022, and his integration of the million-dollar new arrivals, while the record champions also finished with a negative goal difference for the first time in Premier League history.

Countless succession candidates were therefore discussed around Old Trafford, including former Brighton coach Roberto de Zerbi and ex-Chelsea coach Mauricio Pochettino, as well as Thomas Tuchel, who only recently became available – but now the decision is said to have been made in favour of ten Hags.

Managers are sticking with ten Hag – and want to extend his contract

The Athletic reports, citing talks held on Tuesday between ten Hag and the decision-makers around co-owner Jim Ratcliffe and Dave Brailsford, sports director of investor Ineos. According to the statement, an agreement was reached with the 54-year-old to continue working together beyond the summer.

And what’s more: according to the report, those responsible are probably doing a 180-degree turnaround and are now even offering ten Hag an extension to his contract, which is only valid until summer 2025.
