The Dallas Mavericks have clarity in the coaching position for the next few years: Jason Kidd (51) has extended his contract with the Texans.
It’s currently going well in Dallas. The team led by Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving has just reached the second round of the playoffs and will now face the Oklahoma City Thunder. The club now also has planning security in the coaching position. The team led by national player Maxi Kleber announced on Monday that Kidd had signed for several years. The Mavs did not disclose the exact term.
“We are very pleased that Coach Kidd will continue to lead our team in the coming years. He has led our team to the playoffs twice in three years and we look forward to seeing how he will continue to develop this great franchise,” said Dallas owner Patrick Dumont.
Kidd has coached the Dallas Mavericks since 2021 and knows the club inside out. Alongside Dirk Nowitzki, the ingenious set-up player brought the first and so far only championship to Dallas in 2011. The Mavs beat LeBron James and the Miami Heat 4:2 in the finals.
The 51-year-old now also wants to ensure a successful time as a coach. In his first season, he took the Mavericks straight to the Conference Finals, where the Golden State Warriors, who later went on to win the title against the Boston Celtics, were one size too big. The Mavs clearly lost the series 4:1.
Difficult task against OKC
Last season, the Texans missed out on the playoffs completely, finishing eleventh in the table. In the current season, they finished in fifth place and the Mavs now face a tough opponent in the second round in the form of the Thunder. The team led by top player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander gave the New Orleans Pelicans no chance in a 4:0 sweep in the first round. As first in the main round, OKC should by no means be underestimated.
But the Mavs showed what they are capable of in the series against the Clippers (4-2). Doncic and Irving can carry the team. The first game of the best-of-seven series takes place on Wednesday night at 3.30 a.m. (CET).
