Feyenoord are Dutch Cup winners, Rotterdam won the final against Nijmegen 1:0. The match had to be interrupted because the fire department was needed
The game was overshadowed by two interruptions. There was already an interruption in the first half because fans of both clubs had set off a lot of pyrotechnics. The same thing happened again after the break with the score at 0-0, but this time a Feyenoord banner caught fire. After unsuccessful attempts to disperse the smoke and stop the fire, the fire department finally had to intervene – as a result, the game had to be interrupted for half an hour.
After the restart, it was Feyenoord who finally broke the spell and took the lead: Igor Paixao skillfully finished a wonderfully executed move down the right-hand side and through many stations into the bottom right-hand corner from eleven meters to make it 1:0 (59′). That was also the only goal of the game, meaning that the team from Rotterdam won the Dutch Cup once again after 2018 – the 14th cup triumph in total for “De club van het volk” (the people’s club).
Former German junior international goalkeeper and ex-Bundesliga player Timon Wellenreuther (10 league games for FC Schalke 04) was in the box as usual for the Rotterdam side, who finished the game with ten players after Yankuba Minteh was shown a yellow card in the 72nd minute. The Gambian wept bitterly afterwards because he had weakened his team so much. In the end, however, it all came to nothing for the 19-year-old, while Nijmegen’s cup curse continues: NEC conceded their fifth defeat in their fifth KNVB Cup final.
