After three double victories for Red Bull in four races of the 2024 Formula 1 season, many observers are asking themselves: Where does the record actually stand? Here is the answer
The 2024 Formula 1 season has been the year of double victories so far. Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez have already finished first and second for Red Bull three times, while Carlos Sainz has won once ahead of Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc. But where do the two teams actually stand in the “eternal leaderboard” of Formula 1 double victories?
It shows the top 10 Formula 1 teams with the most double victories and highlights some special successes among these double victories.
For example, some teams have managed to end their first Grand Prix outing with a double victory. Others, on the other hand, have been waiting for another Formula 1 victory since the last one-two.
The question of who has achieved the double victories is also exciting. At Mercedes, for example, Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg are astonishing with 31 double victories in just three years. This means that Mercedes took first and second place 52 percent of the time from 2014 to 2016, in 31 out of 59 Grands Prix.
Older Formula 1 fans are likely to remember the Ferrari one-two victories of Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello from 2000 to 2005 – and how there were several team-internal position swaps shortly before the end, sometimes deliberate (Austria 2001 and 2002) and sometimes unintentional (Indianapolis 2002).
Incidentally, one of the most unusual Formula 1 one-two victories occurred long before that: the winner and runner-up at the 1976 Swedish Grand Prix in Anderstorp crossed the finish line on six wheels each – for the ninth and last one-two victory for Tyrrell with the legendary six-wheel P34 racing car. It remained the only Grand Prix success for this special car
In more recent years, however, there was an accumulation of one-two victories, which were also first victories. The early stages of the 2009 Formula 1 season alone were the stage for two of these scenarios, and one of the teams involved is still at the front today. After just one year of existence, the other is at the back end of the top 10 teams with the most one-two victories.
