Joker McTominay makes the difference: Manchester United win at Aston Villa

Manchester United claimed their fourth win in a row in all competitions with a fortunate victory at Aston Villa. As a result, the gap to an international place has shrunk to five points

Manchester United, who started with Varane in place of the injured Martinez compared to the 3-0 win over West Ham, started the game better and missed their first chances through Höjlund (13) and Garnacho (13). A few minutes later, however, the Red Devils were able to celebrate after Maguire crossed a corner from Bruno Fernandes to the free-standing Höjlund, who had no trouble finishing from close range to put the visitors ahead (17′).

Onana at the post – Ramsey misses

After that, United pulled back and allowed more against the initially pale Lions. Onana had to intervene twice when first McGinn (24) and later Watkins (25) attempted to equalize. Aston Villa became increasingly active and took control of the game, but Ramsey’s shot flew wide right (27).

Manchester United concentrated on defending and lurking on the counter-attack. However, the Red Devils did not create any more opportunities against the better Lions until the break and still led 1:0 at half-time.

Douglas Luiz equalizes – McTominay ice-cold

After the break, Aston Villa continued to press for an equalizer, but Onana was up to the task. United’s goalkeeper produced a superb reflex save from Watkins’ attempt from close range (48′). As the Lions increased the pressure, the Red Devils were no longer able to withstand it and conceded the overdue equalizer. After Bailey’s cross, Douglas Diaz kept his foot in and scored into the right corner (67′).

Manchester United then regained their composure a little bit and scratched for the lead again out of nowhere, but Garnacho just missed it (71′). With Douglas Luiz again missing a great chance to make it 2:1 for Aston Villa, the ice-cold Red Devils struck late on through joker McTominay (86′) to secure an ultimately fortunate victory at the Lions.

Next Sunday, Man United host promoted Luton (5.30pm). The day before, the Villans host Fulham (4 p.m.).
