Inner ligament strain: Bayern have to do without Davies for the time being

FC Bayern and injuries in the 2023/24 season: Alphonso Davies, another Munich player, had to leave the field prematurely with an injury in the 3-1 win over Gladbach

“He has no words” if Alphonso Davies is also forced off, said Thomas Tuchel shortly after the win against the Foals. “He twisted his knee,” explained the Munich coach – and added that the Canadian had recently been on his way back to better form.

Late substitution after a clearing action

It was the 82nd minute on Saturday afternoon when Davies, after a running duel with Gladbach right-back Franck Honorat, defused the latter’s attempted cross with a long step near the byline for a corner kick. However, the 23-year-old immediately felt pain in his knee, received treatment from Bayern’s medical staff and then slowly walked back to the bench on his own, while Raphael Guerreiro came on for the final few minutes. The Portuguese would probably also be the first candidate to replace Davies in next Saturday’s summit clash at Bayer 04 Leverkusen (6.30pm).

After an initial in-depth examination, FC Bayern announced on Saturday evening that Davies had pulled a ligament in his left knee and would have to take a “break”.

So while Tuchel will have to do without Davies for the time being, two other players could be available again for the game against the Werkself. It will be decided “in the middle of the week” whether Dayot Upamecano and Joshua Kimmich will travel to Leverkusen. “We’ll definitely try that,” hoped Tuchel.

Kim still busy at the Asian Cup

In any case, the record champions will have to do without Serge Gnabry (muscle tendon injury in the left adductor area), Bouna Sarr (cruciate ligament rupture) and reserve keeper Daniel Peretz.

Defender Min-Jae Kim is still missing due to his participation with South Korea at the Asian Cup, especially as former national coach Jürgen Klinsmann’s team reached the semi-finals on Friday after a close game against Australia (2:1 after extra time). South Korea will now play Jordan in the first semi-final on Tuesday (4pm) – albeit without Kim, who is suspended for yellow cards. The final of the Asian Championship in Qatar is scheduled for Saturday (4pm), immediately before the top match in the Bundesliga.
