United Cup: Germany through

Alexander Zverev and Angelique Kerber were able to celebrate reaching the quarter-finals of the United Cup “on the couch”

The German tennis team led by Alexander Zverev and Angelique Kerber is through to the quarter-finals of the United Cup. Despite the bitter defeat against France on Monday, the team advanced to the next round as the best group runners-up in the first half of the tournament in Sydney. Greece now await them there on Friday at 7.30 am (CET).

After the opening win against Italy and the defeat against France in the preliminary round, Germany no longer had their progression in their own hands. In the early hours of Wednesday morning German time, France first secured group victory with a 3-0 win over Italy – followed by a Greek victory over Canada to ensure progression.

The mixed nations competition is being held for the second time as a season opener and preparation for the Australian Open. After two singles matches, there is a potentially decisive mixed match.

Despite the addition of doubles specialist Laura Siegemund and Maximilian Marterer to the squad, Germany has so far relied exclusively on returning player Kerber and Olympic champion Zverev in both singles and doubles. Kerber has not yet achieved a singles success after her comeback around 10 months after the birth of her daughter Liana.
