FIFA disciplinary proceedings after riots at Brazil vs. Argentina

Two days ago, the classic match between Brazil and Argentina (0:1) kicked off in South America – with devastating side effects. This has now brought FIFA onto the scene

Shortly before kick-off of the World Cup qualifier between record world champions Brazil and reigning champions Argentina (0:1), there were violent riots between the two fan groups in the stands of the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro. The police even used batons to contain the riots.

FIFA has now initiated disciplinary proceedings against Argentina and Brazil at the same time. This was reported by the AP news agency on Friday, citing the world soccer association. Due to the violent riots in the stands of the stadium, the kick-off of the prestigious duel between the South American arch-rivals was delayed by a whole 27 minutes last Tuesday.

“No place for violence “

The Argentinian federation is to be held accountable for the delay and the riots. As the host, the Brazilian association is accused of failing to manage security.

The clashes began shortly after the national anthems were played. Among other things, parts of benches and other objects were thrown by some fans. At least one person was injured. And the players on the pitch had tried to calm the situation, but then went into the dressing room.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino had already criticized the incidents via Instagram last Wednesday: “There is absolutely no place for violence in soccer, neither on the pitch nor off it. “
