The squad planners at Real Madrid are obviously in a hurry these days. After the contracts of the two Brazilians Vinicius Junior (until 2027) and Rodrygo (until 2028) were extended ahead of schedule last week, Eduardo Camavinga was given a new contract on Tuesday. The French international’s contract, which originally ran until 2027, was extended ahead of schedule by a further two years until June 30, 2029. According to the club-affiliated newspaper “Marca”, the trio’s release clause has risen to the impressive, but not unusual in Spain, figure of one billion euros.
As part of the extension, which had been negotiated for some time and has now been made public, Camavinga’s salary is also said to have been increased significantly. The 20-year-old Frenchman, who was nominated for the Golden Boy in 2021 and 2022 and the Kopa Trophy in 2022 and 2023, is currently playing his third season in a Royal jersey
His collection of titles is already impressive: Champions League winner, Club World Cup winner, European Super Cup winner, Spanish champion, Spanish Cup winner and Spanish Super Cup winner each. The twelve-time French senior international has a total of 114 competitive appearances to his name, with Camavinga scoring two goals himself and setting up five others.
Positional dilemma leaves Camavinga cold
Coach Carlo Ancelotti also values him because he has turned out to be a real “all-purpose weapon” since his €30 million move from Rennes on August 31, 2021. In addition to his regular position in central midfield, Camavinga has also proven to be an excellent left-back.
A role that doesn’t really suit him. He made this clear at the press conference before the first leg against Union Berlin in mid-September: “I don’t really like playing in this position, but there are times when you have to do things for the team.” The advantage was, of course, that he had “played more and gained more experience”. And there is enough time until 2029 to establish himself in midfield too
