The successful qualifying team is set to do the honours for Germany’s women’s tennis team in the final round of the Billie Jean King Cup.
The German women’s tennis team will go into the final round of the Billie Jean King Cup in Seville in November with an unchanged line-up. Team captain Rainer Schüttler nominated Tatjana Maria (Bad Saulgau), Anna-Lena Friedsam (Neuwied), Laura Siegemund (Metzingen), Eva Lys (Hamburg) and Jule Niemeier (Dortmund) for the final round, as he did during the successful qualifying match against Brazil (3:1) in Stuttgart in April.
“These players have convinced us with strong performances in Stuttgart and deserve to continue the common path in Seville,” said Schüttler. “The team has grown close over the past matches and has developed a strong team feeling which, together with our playing quality, makes us a difficult opponent for any nation.”
Twelve teams will fight for the title in the final round from 7 to 12 November. Germany will meet Italy in the preliminary round on 9 November and France one day later – only the group winners will qualify for the semi-finals, which will be played on 11 November. Two singles and one doubles are scheduled in all matches.
“Italy and France both have very strong teams with world-class players in the team, who will demand everything from us. Certainly we are not the favourites in the group, but we are looking forward to this task,” said Schüttler. The German women’s tennis team is having a rather disappointing season. Maria is currently the only top 100 player in the WTA rankings as world number 55.
