Olympic ticket for wrestler

Luisa Niemesch reaches for World Championship bronze and has her sights set on the first Olympic ticket for the German Wrestling Federation (DRB).

Luisa Niemesch is going for World Championship bronze and has her sights set on the first Olympic ticket for the German Wrestling Federation (DRB). The 28-year-old from SV Weingarten only failed in the semi-finals of the 62 kg weight category at the title bouts in Belgrade on Wednesday. The “small final” for bronze is scheduled for Thursday.

If she wins the medal, Niemesch will have a place in the Olympic Games in Paris next year. If she loses, she will have to fight for the last Olympic ticket.

So far, Anastasia Blayvas has won a bronze medal from the DRB’s point of view. However, the weight category of the Leipzig native up to 55 kg is not Olympic. The freestyle specialists were all eliminated early. The last Olympic hopes rest on the German starters in the Greco-Roman style. They have to take to the mat on the last three days of the World Championships from Thursday to Sunday.

The first five in each of the 18 Olympic weight categories (women and men) will secure their Olympic ticket in the Serbian capital. Further starting places will be awarded at qualifying tournaments in the run-up to the Games next year.
