American Jessica Pegula has secured victory in impressive fashion at the WTA Tournament in Montreal. She defeated Ludmilla Samsonova (No. 15) 6-1, 6-0 in just 49 minutes in the final to triumph for the second time at a WTA 1000-level tournament.
Two weeks before the start of the US Open in New York, Pegula underlined her strong form. She had knocked out Polish world number one Iga Swiatek in the semi-finals.
Meanwhile, Jannik Sinner from Italy won his first ATP Masters title in Toronto. He defeated Australian Alex de Minaur 6:4, 6:1 in the final and celebrated the biggest success of his career. He had lost in each of his previous finals at the Masters in Miami in 2021 and 2023.
At the tournament in the Canadian metropolis, Germany’s top player Alexander Zverev had already been eliminated in the second round. The 13th seed from Hamburg was without a chance against Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
