EA SPORTS has given FIFA 23 numerous smaller and bigger updates. One of them is the adaptive player change. We reveal what exactly this brings with it.
The ball zaps into the net, the opposing attacker turns away and cheers, defeat is sealed. Annoying – especially if the chance only came about because you had previously selected a defender you didn’t want. Every FIFA player knows this problem.
Only stick changes benefit
In FIFA 23 the new adaptive player changes should help you to provide more precision. First of all: This is only available if you change your players with the right stick. If you only use the left shoulder button (L1,LB), the new function is of no use. However, you should perhaps consider training yourself to use the right stick, as this gives you more freedom in your switching decisions.
But what are the actual advantages of adaptive switching? Quite simply, you can control more precisely the distance over which you select a new player. The longer you hold down the right stick in one direction, the further your cursor jumps across the field.
So if you want to switch from one central defender to the next, you only have to tap the stick briefly. If you want to follow a change of flank from your opponent, hold the right stick down in the direction of the desired player and jump from left to right defender, for example.
Essential Settings
But beware: The direction in which you have to press the stick also depends on a setting. You can choose whether you want to orientate yourself according to the ball or the player you are currently controlling. Depending on what you choose, you will perform the changes accordingly to the right of your current player or the game device.
To try out the different player switching options, simply go to Settings in the main menu and then select “Customise Controls”. Scroll down until you find the options for adaptive switching, which you can of course deactivate if you don’t like it.
However, the new switching system has earned itself a chance. In our first gameplay test, we found it to be a sensible innovation – and perhaps with a little practice it can help you to swallow a few less frustrating goals against.
