Germany’s former national basketball coach Dirk Bauermann will not continue as Tunisia’s national coach – the reason is a case of illness in the 64-year-old’s family.
In an interview with Sportradio Bremen, Bauermann looks back on “a great experience working on another continent”. After celebrating seven consecutive German championships with TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the early 1990s, the Oberhausen native made the decision to switch to the Tunisian federation in 2020. Together with his team, Bauermann missed out on qualifying for the Olympic Games in Tokyo, followed by winning the continental championship in September 2021. “Becoming African champions with the guys was great,” Bauermann continued.
“Illness in the family” ends adventure
Now, however, comes the return to Germany. “Other things are much more important right now,” the German explains his decision. “I will not stay in Tunisia, there is a case of illness in the family. That’s why I can’t be abroad, I have to stay in my home country.”
