The German wrestlers missed the semi-finals at the start of the World Championships in Belgrade, but some of them still have hopes. None of the four German starters made it past the quarter-finals on the first day of competition in the Greco-Roman style in the Serbian capital.
However, Hannes Wagner (87 kg category) and Fabian Schmitt (55 kg category) may still have faint hopes of winning a medal, as their opponents advanced to the semi-finals.
Wagner lost his quarter-final against local hero Zurabi Datunashvili with 0:5. The Serb Datunashvili fights in the semi-finals in the evening and could enter the final with a victory over the Hungarian David Losonczi and thus clear Wagner’s way into the hope round. Schmitt also failed in the round of the last eight to Max Nowry from the USA, who also entered the semifinals.
Idris Ibaev (up to 77 kg), German U23 World Champion of 2021, was eliminated in the round of last eight with 2:11 against Tamerlan Shadukayev from Kazakhstan. Samuel Bellscheid (up to 72 kg) was also defeated in the round of the last 16 by the Bulgarian Deywid Dimitrow with 2:3.
