Doubles Krawietz/Mies miss out on round of 16 at US Open

After their early exit from the US Open, the tennis doubles team of Kevin Krawietz/Andreas Mies has drawn a sobering conclusion to their Grand Slam season.

He could “not draw a good conclusion, you have to say that dryly. If you only see the Grand Slam tournaments, then it’s not good,” said Krawietz: “If we play well, we belong to the top ten, eight doubles. But we also have to call it off.”

The two-time French Open winners failed to do that in their second-round match in New York. The twelfth-seeded duo made many avoidable errors and were beaten 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-3), 3-6 by Austria’s Philipp Oswald and Robin Haase of the Netherlands.

No control

“We both had the feeling: factually we are so much better, but we didn’t get control of the match,” said Krawietz. Previously, the German top doubles team had also been eliminated early at the Australian Open (round of 16) and French Ppen (1st round). On grass in Wimbledon, they had at least made it to the quarter-finals.

The day before, Krawietz and Mies had faced each other. In the mixed doubles, Krawietz and Nicole Mellchar-Martinez from the USA won in two sets (7:6, 7:6). Mies was paired with Erin Routliffe from New Zealand.
