FIFA initially put its foot down after the scandal in Sao Paulo in September 2021, but the abandoned World Cup qualifier between Brazil and Argentina will not be replayed.
In February, FIFA had insisted that Brazil and Argentina should meet again in Sao Paulo on 22 September to make up for the World Cup qualifier that was abandoned on 5 September. However, the match, which was abandoned after a Corona scandal, will not take place. The two national football associations made the announcement on Tuesday after reaching an agreement with FIFA.
So both federations must pay a fine – 150,000 Swiss francs each, according to the Argentinian federation, with half suspended for two years. In return, FIFA will refrain from making up the match, which has no sporting significance. In April, the FIFA Appeals Committee had rejected the appeals of both countries.
Brazil and Argentina qualified for the World Cup in Qatar (21 November to 18 December) as first and second in their group in South America.
