Heel fracture: Aleix Espargaro injured after Silverstone crash after all

Aprilia rider Aleix Espargaro has been injured after all in his highsider in FT4 at Silverstone – The Spaniard has to rest due to a heel fracture in the right foot

An initial check-up at the track had revealed no fractures. But now Aprilia confirm that Aleix Espargaro has been diagnosed with a heel fracture in his right foot after further medical checks on Monday

The Spaniard crashed in a highsider at 185km/h during the fourth free practice session of the MotoGP weekend at Silverstone and initially had to be taken away on a stretcher. He was checked in the medical centre at the track and then took part in the qualifying session, where he finished sixth on the grid.

However, it was initially unclear whether he would be able to start on Sunday. But Espargaro was declared fit to race and finished the Grand Grix in ninth place.

Back in Spain, the Aprilia rider had another thorough examination in Barcelona on Monday. The aforementioned fracture was detected. But Aprilia reassured: “The injury does not require surgical treatment. “

“Aleix has been prescribed seven days of absolute rest, during which he must use crutches to avoid putting any strain on his injured foot,” read a statement from the team. “The goal is to compete at the next race weekend (August 19-21 in Austria) in the best physical condition.”

Despite the injury and associated limitations, Espargaro lost only one point in the race to world championship leader Fabio Quartararo, who finished eighth. As a result, Quartararo’s lead in the championship is now 22 points. Silverstone winner Francesco Bagnaia was able to close the gap to 49 points.
