Weiler-Babb may play for Germany

Bayern guard Nick Weiler-Babb can play for the German national team in the future. As the German Basketball Federation announced on Friday, the US-born player has received his naturalisation certificate.

The 26-year-old is expected to join the European Championship squad as early as this Saturday in Cologne. “This is a great thing for us as DBB as well as for him. He’s a great guy who will fit in well with the national team,” said national coach Gordon Herbert, according to a statement.

The Bayern professional has German roots and has been playing in Germany for just over three years – first in Ludwigsburg and since 2020 with the Munich side, where he recently extended his contract for two more years until 2024.

“After the great experience with Bayern in the Euroleague, I’m looking forward to the opportunity to now prove myself at the high level of the national teams. The sustainable perspective with a European Championship in Germany, hopefully with a World Cup, Olympic Games with the German national team and some more, that excites me immensely,” said Weiler-Babb, who was born in the US state of Kansas.

On 28 August, Weiler-Babb could play in the national jersey in familiar surroundings. The DBB team will then play its World Cup qualifier against Slovenia in Munich’s Audi Dome. The Germans kick off the European Championships on 1 September against co-favourites France.
