Transfer coup: LASK signs Robert Zulj

Long-time Germany legionnaire Robert Zulj has signed a three-year contract with LASK.

Austrian Bundesliga side LASK have secured the services of attacking midfielder Robert Zulj. In a media release on Sunday, the Linz side announced the “transfer coup”, Zulj, trained in the Linz academy and after eight years in Germany most recently spent a season in the United Arab Emirates, is thus returning to his roots.

“After playing abroad, it’s something very special for me as an Upper Austrian to be able to play for LASK. Despite several offers – also from the German Bundesliga – sports director (Radovan) Vujanovic and president (Siegmund) Gruber were able to convince me of what is in the making here at LASK,” Zulj was quoted as saying.

LASK coach Kühbauer gets “absolute leader

Coach Dietmar Kühbauer was pleased about an “absolute leading player. With his playing skills, he will definitely raise the quality of the squad. Offensively, he can also play all positions,” said Kühbauer about the brother of former international Peter Zulj, who can be deployed both up front and in attacking midfield.

Zulj started his professional career in 2010 at Ried, after a short intermezzo at Red Bull Salzburg in 2014 he moved to Germany. There he scored 39 goals (37 assists) in 156 second-division games for Greuther Fürth, Union Berlin and VfL Bochum, while he did not make more than five appearances for first-division side Hoffenheim. In 2020/21, he led Bochum to promotion, but then opted for a lucrative transfer to Emirates club Al-Ittihad Kalba.
