51-Year-old George Weah (Now President of Liberia) Plays for National Team

Football is full of crazy events but George Weah taking time out from being president of his country to put his football boots back on in a match against Nigeria has got to be one of the most unlikely ones we’ll see. At 51, Weah’s best years are long gone and he has been spending his time after football to help his country in a very different way – through his presidential duties.

But he turned back the clock this week to come on against Nigeria to play his first game since he retired 15 years ago. He played 79 minutes of the match and showed that he is still capable of showcasing his unique skills. Weah had a glittering career that saw him pull on the shirts of Monaco, PSG, A.C. Milan, Chelsea, Manchester City, and Marseille.

George Weah had a remarkable football career

In 1995 he was named the FIFA World Player of the Year and he also won the coveted Ballon d’Or. He became the first African player to do that and remains the only African winner to this date. He is widely regarded as the greatest African player football has ever seen.

He became the President of Liberia in the 2017 election and was sworn in as recently as January 2018. The match against Nigeria was arranged as a friendly for Weah to appear and captain the team before his No.14 shirt was retired. He’s probably been too busy in the last 15 years to do it any earlier!

Even more interestingly, as Weah was strutting his stuff against Nigeria, his son Timothy Weah was playing for the United States aged 18. Weah Jr. is following in his father’s footsteps by plying his trade in the French league, where he is currently playing for PSG. There is a lot of excitement around the young player’s ability and he recently made the PSG first team, which is very impressive for a teenager.
