On Sunday, four decisions were made for the world championship title at the eFootball Championship Open. While the only German participant came away empty-handed, the champions each won 13,000 US dollars.
In the amateur tournament for up-and-coming players, the PlayStation World Championship title and prize money went to Brazil. ‘Futefacil10’, competing with FC Barcelona, had first beaten Japan’s ‘Leva’ 4-2 in a tight group stage in the deciding match to reach the final – before things got much more dramatic in the final.
Brazilian keeps his cool from the spot
At first trailing against Group B’s sovereign winners ‘SalifAlhacker55’ of Jordan, the eventual world champions only managed to equalise in the 92nd minute. No more goals were to be scored in extra time, so the penalty shoot-out had to decide the match. After numerous misses by both players, the final score was 2-1 in favour of the 21-year-old Brazilian.
Meanwhile, things were no less tight on the Xbox. After two wins each, Italy’s ‘xNaples17x’ and Argentina’s ‘Ivanmelian’ had qualified for the final – and delivered a first-class exchange of blows right from the start: less than ten minutes had passed before the score was already 1-1 after Argentina had taken the lead and Italy had equalised.
After the break, ‘xNaples17x’ managed to take the lead before another late goal in the 88th minute made it 2-2 and extra time. This time, however, there was no drama from the spot. In the 112th minute, the Italian consistently finished off a final attack to secure a 3-2 win on the Microsoft console.
Unthreatened champion in Steam final
Meanwhile, the most commanding victory of the day came in the battle and the Steam gamers’ crown. With ‘Ner-‘ and ‘Verdy_Takai_’, a Peruvian and a Japanese had prevailed in the group stage. Already unstoppable in the group stage, ‘Verdy_Takai’ didn’t miss a beat in the final.
One wave of attacks after the next collapsed on ‘Ner-‘, and the score was already 2:0 at half-time. Accordingly, the South American had to increase the risk in the second half, but conceded the decisive third goal after a good ingame hour, which was followed by the 4:0 shortly before the end.
Finally, a mobile champion was crowned. A German participant, ‘Khanhs’, also competed on the mobile end device, but had to be content with second place in Group A. ‘ig_as’ was too strong. Too strong had been ‘ig_asgard_azizi’ from Indonesia, who then faced the Brazilian ‘SERGIGAME’ in the final.
Third overtime brings second title to Asia
In the final match of the Championship Open, both players showed high-class gameplay and did not give each other a millimetre. The Indonesian took an early lead before the Brazilian equalised before half-time and even took the lead after the break.
For a long time it looked as if the game was decided, but a goal in the last minute of injury time saved ‘ig_asgard_azizi’ the draw and the third extra time of the day.
In this, the winner of Group A kept their cool in the aftermath. SERGIGAME’, on the other hand, could not recover from the shock of the late equaliser. A few minutes after the restart, the Brazilian was forced to concede the 2:3 before the Indonesian made everything clear in the 116th minute and brought the second trophy of the evening to Asia.
