5000 and 1000: Schick’s very special penalty in Frankfurt

Patrik Schick made Bundesliga history with his penalty goal in Frankfurt on Sunday – in two respects. He didn’t even have to score for that one.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen’s sobering 5-2 defeat at Eintracht Frankfurt will not necessarily go down in history, but it will go down all the more in the Bundesliga. And that was only due to the penalty kick that Patrik Schick converted in the 22nd minute to give the visitors a 2:0 lead.

This made Schick’s penalty debut the 1000th penalty taker in Bundesliga history – and curiously enough, he also took his 5000th penalty in the German top flight. The 4999th had been taken by VfB striker Omar Marmoush in Wolfsburg on Saturday evening and hit the crossbar.

The fact that Schick converted against Kevin Trapp fits better into the statistics: 3742 of the 5000 attempts were converted, i.e. 74.8 per cent. 18.4 per cent were saved, 6.8 per cent were missed.

The 1000 shooters were opposed by “only” 381 goalkeepers

The best rate among the current Bundesliga teams is held by 1. FSV Mainz 05, who have sunk 58 of their 64 penalties (90.6 per cent) – including all 32 since 2013. SpVgg Greuther Fürth have the weakest record at 57.1 per cent (4 of 7), but have also had far fewer attempts. Leverkusen’s 75.9 per cent is pretty much in line with the historical Bundesliga average, but that only puts them in tenth place among current first division clubs.

It will still be a while before a goalkeeper’s jubilee. The 1000 shooters were “only” matched by 381 different keepers, four of whom were field players. In the current calendar year – as in 2020 – only three new penalty goalkeepers were added.
