Michael Fassbender causes the scariest moment of Le Mans qualifying with his Porsche – After that, nothing works due to rain – Who is in the hyperpole
The one-hour qualifying for the 24h of Le Mans 2022 is history. And again it was the Toyota team that came out on top. The best time went to the GR010 Hybrid 7 (Conway/Kobayashi/Lopez) in 3:27.247 minutes. Time improvements were not possible at the end due to a heavy accident of Michael Fassbender and a rain shower.
As in the 1st free practice session, the Glickenhaus squad followed in second and third place. This time the 8 (Buemi/Hartley/Hirakawa) only finished 29th and was thus the slowest prototype. The Japanese worked for a long time on the right rear side of the second GR010 Hybrid. It took a long time before the car could even go on track. But since there are only five cars in the hypercar class anyway, they are all qualified for the hyperpole session on Thursday.
The situation is different in the very strong LMP2 class: A total of 27 cars fought for the six grid positions for the Hyperpole Shootout. The WRT Oreca 36.

Also making it into the hyperpole were the Jota Oreca 9 (Kubica/Deletraz/Colombo).
Riley-Ferrari fails to make the jump
In the GTE-Pro category, the 52 (Molina/Fuoco/Rigon).
In the GT amateurs, the Prodrive-Aston-Martin
The qualifying session at Le Mans went quietly before a high-speed crash by Hollywood star Michael Fassbender, of all people, caused an interruption. Fassbender crashed in the 93 Proton Porsche (Fassbender/Campbell/Robichon) on the Hunaudieres straight, the team’s 911 RSR – 19 was severely damaged afterwards.
At least Fassbender was fine after the accident, as he indicated by hand signal. After the accident, the positions were taken: Shortly after the restart of qualifying, the skies over Le Mans opened their floodgates. Improvements were therefore out of the question.
Today, Wednesday, the 2nd free practice session is still on the agenda in Le Mans starting at 22:00 CEST. The hyperpole will take place on Thursday at 20:00 CEST.
