In the aftermath of the qualifying race for the 2022 IMSA season opener at Daytona, there are three penalties in the GT field that will affect the 24-hour race
The qualifying race for the 2022 Daytona 24 Hours saw a thrilling duel for victory in both the DPi and GTD Pro classes last Sunday. In the GTD-Pro class, however, two penalties were subsequently imposed. In addition, there is a penalty in the GTD class.
Two Porsches and one Mercedes are affected. In GTD-Pro, both the WeatherTech Porsche (97) that finished P4 were given a retrospective time penalty. In GTD, the Wright-Porsche (car number 16), which finished in P3, received a time penalty.
Reason: The parameters set by tyre supplier Michelin together with the IMSA were not adhered to. The parameters refer to the wheel camber, whereby a negative camber may not be more extreme than -3.5 degrees. Secondly, they relate to tyre pressure, whereby the output pressure must not be lower than 29 psi (2 bar).
It is not clear which parameter(s) were breached in the three cases. However, the penalties mean that the WeatherTech Porsche (Andlauer/Picariello/MacNeil/Cairoli) and the WeatherTech Mercedes (Engel/Gounon/MacNeil/Juncadella) in GTD-Pro as well as the Wright Porsche (Hardwick/Heylen/Robichon/Lietz) in GTD lose their starting positions for the 24-hour race which they had gained in the qualifying race.
The official starting grid for the 24-hour race next weekend is not yet available as of Tuesday Infos 24h Daytona 2022: Livestream, TV times, schedule, starting list and co.
