Italy’s champions Inter Milan posted a huge loss last year: The Nerazzurri announced on Thursday that they ended the 2020/21 financial year with a minus of 245.6 million euros.
Inter attributed the disastrous result to a lack of ticket sales due to the pandemic and lower sponsorship income. The bottom line, according to the “Gazzetta dello Sport”, is the biggest loss in Serie A history.
After record champions Juventus, who last reported a loss of 209.9 million euros, another “heavyweight” of Italian football is now in a precarious economic situation.
Milanese expect recovery
The Milanese, however, assume that things will be better in the current financial year and that the loss will be smaller. This for two reasons: Fans are allowed back and cost-cutting measures have been introduced. Inter had parted with some stars like Romelu Lukaku (Chelsea) or Achraf Hakimi (PSG) in the summer.
Since 2019, the Nerazzurri have been in the hands of the Chinese retail giant Suning Commerce. The club president is Steven Zhang, who is only 29 years old.
