Surprise names at the top of the leaderboard after Round 1

Hideki Matsuyama, Tommy Fleetwood, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Rafa Cabrera Bello and Paul Casey are not far behind on -4 but there are some names at the top of the leaderboard that are not the ones we are necessarily used to seeing.

There could be play-offs to decide the cut

The results so far are building up to the possibility of facing play-offs to progress, as 125 of the best golfers strive to make it through to the next stage. We are missing Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler and Henrik Stenson but apart from that, all of the top players are here to compete.

Jordan Spieth has struggled somewhat and finished Round 1 with -1, whilst Tiger Woods and Webb Simpson have finished on evens. Justin Rose is one over and they will all need to up their game if they are going to make the cut.

Woods has started slowly at Ridgewood Country Club

A lot of people had been backing Tiger Woods to do well in this competition but he has fallen well behind the pace so far, as have a number of the top golf pros. The second round will certainly be very exciting as we could see the exits of some of the favourites to win the Northern Trust and the potential of a non-favourite to be successful.

The action is currently underway again with Peter Uihlein and Phil Mickelson having both started brightly to make up some ground on the leaderboard so far.
