Iga Swiatek celebrates her next tournament victory. The Pole defeats a Russian in the final in Beijing
World number two Iga Swiatek has won the WTA tournament in Beijing. The Pole beat Russia’s Ludmila Samsonova 6-2, 6-2 in the final on Sunday to celebrate her 16th title overall on the tour.
The French Open winner had ended the impressive winning streak of US Open champion Coco Gauff the day before. After Gauff’s 16 successful matches in a row, Swiatek defeated the American 6:2, 6:3 in the semi-finals and thus achieved the eighth victory in the ninth match against her “favourite opponent”.
Samsonova had somewhat surprisingly reached the final by beating Kazakhstan’s 2022 Wimbledon champion Yelena Rybakina 7-6 (9-7), 6-3.
