FC Bayern usually dances on three high tides for a long time during the season. In the cup, the Munich team was caught early again – and with a 5-0 defeat. In the league and in Europe, there hasn’t been such a black hour in a long time. A brief overview of historical negative experiences
Cup: Bayern never lost higher than in Gladbach
The 0:5 on Wednesday evening at Borussia Mönchengladbach is the highest defeat the record cup winners (20 triumphs) have ever conceded in the DFB Cup. Almost 50 years ago, the Munich team had to concede five goals – on 12 April 1972, Franz Beckenbauer, Paul Breitner & Co. lost 1:5 in the quarter-final second leg at 1. FC Köln. FCB goal scorer Gerd Müller scored the consolation goal. In the 2012 final, the record holders were also beaten badly: 2:5 after 90 minutes against BVB.
Bundesliga: Klaus Fischer paves the way to the biggest nightmare
The last time FC Bayern suffered such a crushing defeat in the Bundesliga was on 9 December 1978, when Fortuna Düsseldorf gave the Munich side seven goals – today’s Fortunen board member Klaus Allofs opened the scoring with a brace to make it 7-1. But this was not the highest Bayern defeat in the history of the now proud record champion – a good two years earlier, the Schalkers dismantled FC Bayern 7-0 at home in the Olympiastadion – Klaus Fischer’s four goals were a nightmare for Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Uli Hoeneß.
European Cup: Copenhagen give Bayern the most goals
In the long European Cup history of FC Bayern there is no defeat with five or more goals difference – but seven duels with four goals difference. A particularly heavy blow came on 22 October 1991 from Danish club B 1903 Copenhagen, who inflicted a 2:6 defeat on the Munich side in the UEFA Cup of the time. The defeat in the UEFA Cup semi-finals on 22 April 1980, when Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt dissected FC Bayern 5:1, albeit after extra time, was also particularly bitter. Two Champions League defeats against the Spanish giants FC Barcelona and Real Madrid also remain in particularly negative memory: on 8 April 2009, Klinsmann’s team lost 4-0 to the Catalans coached by Pep Guardiola in the quarter-finals, and on 29 April 2014 they also lost 4-0 to the royals – at that time Bayern coach Guardiola was responsible for the disgrace in the semi-finals.
