The cash desk rings at FC Groningen and Willem II after one million transfers by Van Dijk.

On Wednesday evening Liverpool rounded off the long-awaited arrival of Virgil van Dijk. The 26-year-old Orange-international is said to be taken over from Southampton for 84.5 million euros, making it the most expensive defender of all time in one fell swoop. The lucrative deal also turns out to be no harm to former employers FC Groningen and William II.

According to the Dagblad van het Noorden (FC Groningen), which Van Dijk had been on the payroll between 2010 and 2013, FC Groningen can count on one percent of the total transfer price, which means that the club would touch 845,000 euros. Groningen already had three million euros left in 2013 for the sale of the defender to Celtic.

Willem II also benefits from the million transfers. Van Dijk received his youth education at the club in Tilburg. Although the training fee has lapsed for the time being now that there is a domestic transfer, a resale clause has been included in Van Dijk’s commitment. Director Berry van Gool told the Brabants Dagblad earlier that Willem II expects to collect 150,000 to 200,000 euros.
