For the first time, after 122 consecutive weeks, Novak Djokovic will no longer be the best ranked tennis player in the world. His place at the ATP throne will be taken by the Brit Andy Murray, who at the age of 29,became the oldest top ranked player since 1974 when John Newcombe took the ATP throne with 30 years of age!!!
However, despite the fact that Murray is the new ATP king, many believe that that he is still far from being the BEST tennis player and that Novak Djokovic is still better!!!
The reason for that are the relentless ATP rules who decided who will be ranked how and how many points a certain player will win if he appears on a given tournament or how many points will a player lose if he fails to win or appear at a certain tournament!!! This is exactly what happened to Novak Djokovic who won the BNP Paribas last year, and who failed to repeat that success this year. Despite the fact that Novak won 2 Grand Slam titles this year (Australian Open and French Open), his points count was cut in half due to the fact that he failed to repeat to win the titles of some of the Masters tournaments which costed him a lot of points, which in the end was the deciding factor that helped Murray reach the Top.
Murray has improved his form significantly in 2016, winning a total of 8 titles, including the Olympic Games, Masters in Shanghai, Vienna, Paris and Beijing, proving his worth and certainly stating that he has deserved to be in the top 2 at the ATP list.
One interesting fact is that when Novak Djokovic was on his way to becoming the No.1 back in 2011, he defeated (at that time) the No. 1 Rafael Nadal 6 times during that year, without losing once. In addition, Novak has played 14 times against the members of the „Top 4“ (Murray, Nadal, Federer) recording 12 wins and only 2 losses.
In comparison, Murray on his road to the Top player Novak Djokovic 4 times during the year, only managing to defeat Novak once and suffering a defeat on three different occasions!!! Furthermore, Murray has played 6 times against the members of the „Top 4“ recording only 2 wins!!!
The facts clearly indicate that Novak had a much tougher road of reaching the Top of the ATP rankings, not to mention that back in 2011, Federer and Nadal were playing in the top form, while today they are miles away from their best form.
However, the same rules could allow Novak Djokovic to re-take the throne after the very next Masters tournament, only if he manages to win the title, while Murray at the other hand, has to see an early exit (which is highly unimaginable)!!!
Whatever the case might be, considering all of the drama that Novak has been through since August, after losing in the first round of the Olympic Games, then the rumor that he has been having an affair with the Bollywood start DeepikaPadukone, and the injuries that caused him to miss some tournaments as the year was closing, indicate that Novak’s focus was turned to many other things besides tennis, and that he should take a short break from tennis and regain his focus before the start of the next season, when he will get the chance to reclaim the ATP throne!!!
