Tottenham Hotspur has been negotiating a new contract with Toby Alderweireld for more than a year, but discussions with the defender’s management have been difficult and this has to do with a clause. Alderweireld’s current contract expires in mid-2019. That’s the moment when the club will light up an option of an extra season until the summer of 2020.
Then, however, a transfer clause of EUR 30 million will also come into force immediately. This means that in the summer of 2019, and no later than two weeks before the end of the summer transfer market, as the contractual provision states, the Belgian international can be taken over from the London people for thirty million euros.
Tottenham wants to continue with Alderweireld for longer than mid-2020, but at the same time delete the clause. The defender, 28 years old, currently earns 55,000 euros per week and wants a significant salary increase in his possibly last contract as a professional footballer. British media ensure on Wednesday that Manchester United keeps a close eye on the situation around Alderweireld, even though the summer arrival of a midfielder to Old Trafford is a priority for manager José Mourinho.
It is certainly not the first time that Mourinho has had an alleged interest in a soccer player from Tottenham. For example, Eric Dier is high on the Portuguese wish list, but the Londoners refuse to cooperate. Danny Rose was also seen as an option to replace Luke Shaw, but the latter ultimately seems to deserve a new contract.
Alderweireld has since been discharged from Tottenham’s infirmary after an absence of three months due to an injury to the hamstrings. The ex-player of a. o. Ajax made his run against Newport County (2-0) a week ago. However, manager Mauricio Pochettino did not include Alderweireld in the competition selection for the Champions League duel with Juventus (2-2). He denied that this had something to do with the contract problems, it was more a precaution.
