Frank Lampard might make a shocking return to Chelsea after the midfielder’s time at New York City came to an end. According to reports, the blues are ready to offer Lampard a role in management at Stamford Bridge.
The former Chelsea favorite played in MLS for two years but the star has confirmed that he is leaving New York after his contract expired. Lampard is set to stay in the world of football with a coaching position on the cards.
However, the player hasn’t decided whether he will hang up the boots and go for a management role or continue to play.
Many rumors are suggesting that Chelsea has opened doors for the return of their legend to bring success in the club.
Lampard played a vital role in the successful spell for Chelsea in which they became a dominant force both in England and Europe. Moreover, Lampard remains Chelsea’s top scorer having struck 211 times.
Despite opting against extending Lampard’s contract as a player a few years back, Chelsea looks set to bring the 38-year-old back to the club.
The Blues have learned a lesson from their surroundings regarding offering management roles to experienced players. Arsenal didn’t offer any position to either Arteta or Patrick Vieira and the duo worked at rivals Manchester City as a result.
Arteta is part of the coaching staff appointed by Pep while Vieira left the technical position to become the manager of New York City. Therefore, Chelsea doesn’t want to make the same mistakes and take the experienced player on board.
Lampard was emotional after confirming the departure from his current club and told the media that he owes people for their support and his time at New York couldn’t have been the same without them.
The player went on to say that the fans were exceptional and they always backed him. Moreover, Lampard extended his gratitude to his team-mates as it was a pleasure for him to play with them.
Vieira has opted not to give Lampard an extension to his contract and the veteran’s time has come to an end. New York City was defeated in the quarters by Toronto in the playoffs of MLS.
Lampard had a great spell in MLS after finding the net 15 times in 29 games. The player averaged a goal in every two games which is an impressive stat.
The coach also paid tribute to the departing player and said that Lampard brought a lot to the team and has mentored the youngsters at the club.
