FC Twente experienced a bad season and the arrival of Gertjan Verbeek has not yet had the desired effect either. The Tukkers have achieved great successes in the recent past, including the 2010 national championship. Steve McClaren was then in charge of the Eredivisionist and looks back with a positive feeling on his time in the Netherlands.
“The Eredivisie was competitive and Ajax’s team was phenomenal, with Luis Suárez who dribbled from the midline to the target for scoring,” says the English training master in conversation with FourFourTwo,”PSV was solid, just like the AZ who became national champion under Louis van Gaal the season before.
“But we also had a very good team, one of the best teams I’ve had in my care,”continues McClaren, who had Bryan Ruiz, Blaise N’ Kufo, Kenneth Perez and Theo Janssen at his disposal. The trainer knows that the national championship in 2010 was a unique achievement, especially considering the history of the Eredivisie.
“I remember a poster depicting the Eredivisie winners of the last fifty years. You could see Ajax, PSV or Feyenoord. But in half a century, two clubs, AZ and Twente, had managed to break through that. Then I realised what a fantastic achievement we had made,”McClaren concludes.
